Our industrial history has been shaped by the availability of forests, hydropower and ports. Communities and industries have therefore been established in the river valleys and along the coast.
Between 1870 and 1930, a total of 30 pulp mills were built in the county and Västernorrland became a centre for cellulose production. Through exports of raw materials and energy, the region continues to be an important industrial centre. It creates the conditions for both large international companies and niche tech companies.
Many people in our region work in the process industry. This collective experience and expertise provides a solid foundation for future establishments.
Some of the region's heavier players are BAE Systems, Bucher Emhart Glass, Holmen Iggesund, Mondi, Permobil, Permascand, SCA and Valmet. With the highest number of patent applications in Sweden, we stand out as an innovative region, ready to meet the demands of the future.
